From 2018 to 2023, Kilchoman offered local retailers the opportunity to create customised bottlings of the distillery´s flagship whisky Machir Bay with the ‘Machir Bay Collaborative Vattings’.
Deviating from the normal cask composition of Machir Bay, which consists of 90% bourbon and 10% Oloroso sherry cask-matured whisky, retailers could choose between four different variants with slightly altered proportions for the Collaborative Vattings: 95% bourbon / 5% sherry, 92.5% bourbon / 7.5% sherry, 87.5% bourbon / 12.5% sherry or 85% bourbon / 15% sherry cask-matured whisky. As with the ‘normal’ Machir Bay bottlings, the alcohol content was 46%. The boxes and bottles in the usual Machir Bay design were labelled with an individual sticker from the retailer.
The Californian wine and spirits store K&L Wine Merchants had already released quite a few exclusive Kilchoman single cask bottlings. It also participated very actively in the Machir Bay Collaborative Vatting Programme: with five different MBCV bottlings, it was the retailer with the most of these bottlings worldwide. On three occasions, it opted for the variant with 85% bourbon and 15% sherry cask content. The bottling listed here, released in 2020, was the third MBCV release from K&L and the second with 15% sherry.
