Kilchoman Orange Wine Cask Finish 18/1230 for Kilchomania.com
In January 2025, German Kilchoman importer Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft Bremen released the world’s first Kilchoman Orange Wine Cask Finish for German Comraich bars.
The whisky was enthusiastically received by Kilchoman fans. The Orange Wine cask gave the Kilchoman distillate a very special, sweet fruit note that cannot be compared to red or white wine cask maturation.
No further Kilchoman Orange Wine cask bottlings have been released since then. While Kilchoman usually offers bottlings of new cask types to all its importers, which generally results in a good dozen single cask bottlings worldwide, whisky enthusiasts outside Germany have not yet been able to try this cask type. This is because Kilchoman was only able to purchase two Orange Wine casks from a cooperage in 2023; there were simply no more available.
This called for a Kilchomania release, and we were indeed able to acquire Kilchoman’s second Orange Wine cask finish. Like its sister cask 1229/2018, our cask was also filled with the slightly less peaty 100% Islay distillate, which certainly benefited the fruitiness. Decanted on 20 June 2023 and bottled on 7 January 2026, our bottling was finished a good year longer than the Comraich release. This made the whisky slightly spicier and more complex, while maintaining its sweetness and fruitiness.
