Kilchoman Brand Ambassador Emma McHarrie was very surprised by the colour of the whisky.

In October 2024, the ‘Italian Cities’ series launched in 2023 continued with a Port Wine Finish. The second edition of the series, dedicated to the city of Rome, features two symbols of Rome on the label: the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica.

The bottling was first presented at KILCHOMAN DAY 2024, which took place on 5 October at the Palazzo Giureconsulti in Piazza del Duomo in Milan.

The whisky, which was initially matured for five years in an ex-bourbon barrel before being finished for almost three years in a port wine cask, stands out for its unusually dark, almost black colour. The taste also makes it clear that the almost three years of port wine cask finish were too long in this case. Woody and bitter notes dominate this whisky. That is why such overloaded casks are normally ‘re-racked’ at Kilchoman, i.e. transferred to other less active casks in order to ‘save’ the whisky. However, the Italian importer obviously wanted to have such a special bottling.
