In 2006 and 2007, Kilchoman sold numerous casks to private individuals in order to obtain urgently needed capital for the distillery’s ongoing operations during the economically strained early years. These were almost exclusively 1st fill and 2nd fill bourbon barrels.
Later, they tried to buy back as many of these casks as possible, as the stocks of whisky from the first years had quickly become very scarce. This buy-back programme was only moderately successful, however, and most owners kept their casks and usually had them bottled after the original agreed storage period of 10 years. So there was a great wave of Kilchoman Private Cask bottlings in 2016 and 2017.

The bottling listed here is one of the not-so-rare examples of whisky shop owners participating in the Kilchoman Private Cask Programme or buying up such casks from their original owner or taking over the distribution.
Hannmann´s is a Wine and Spirits Store in Paderborn, Germany.

Tasting Notes

Albaron
  • Nose:
Citrus fruit, dry ashy smoke, some menthol, a hint of vanilla and slightly creamy in the background, a bit like Werther’s real or creamy toffee, plus a herbal mix and a mineral undertone.
  • Taste:
First the dry smoke, ash, then the menthol, vanilla, a little lemon, just before the finish still strong malt / grain aroma, which perfectly leads into the finish.
  • Finish:
The malt remains and then the smoke always wafts around, with a hint of ash, with a subtle oak aroma, but virtually without tannins.
  • Summary:
Great. One notices the typical dry smoke / ash notes of Kilchoman, but one also notices that he is already mature. Beautiful light oak notes that complement the light citrus notes almost perfect. Belongs to the best pure bourbon matured Kilchomans I had so far in the glass. Great on the nose, but especially in the mouth and in the finish, it unfolds the full splendor. 92 points
