Cask No. 12/2007 was originally a private cask owned by a group of individuals led by former Kilchoman distillery manager Malcolm Rennie, called ‘Friends of Kilchoman’. However, Kilchoman bought back the cask or the larger part of its contents, 96 bottles were bottled for Friends of Kilchoman, 127 bottles on the same day for the Kilchoman Distillery Shop, where they did not hit the shelves until March 2019.
The age statement of 10 years on the label and box is a typo. There are also questions regarding the alcohol content. It is stated as 54.7% on this release, but 57.4% on the bottling for ‘Friends of Kilchoman’ that was bottled at the same day. There has obviously been a mix-up with the numbers, probably incorrectly stated on the Distillery Only Release listed here, whose label was only created three months after bottling.
In 2006 and 2007, Kilchoman sold numerous casks to private individuals in order to obtain urgently needed capital for the distillery’s ongoing operations during the economically strained early years. These were almost exclusively 1st fill and 2nd fill bourbon barrels.
Later, they tried to buy back as many of these casks as possible, as the stocks of whisky from the first years had quickly become very scarce. This buy-back programme was only moderately successful, however, and most owners kept their casks and usually had them bottled after the original agreed storage period of 10 years.
