German Tasting Tour with Anthony Wills from 13 to 17 September 2010 – a review

As part of a tasting tour organised by the German Kilchoman importer Alba Import, Kilchoman’s founder Anthony Wills travelled to five German cities last week. On 13 September in Hamburg, on 14 September in Bremen, on 15 September in Mainz, on 16 September in Darmstadt and, last but not least, on 17 September in Lüdenscheid, Anthony presented the new Islay distillery and spoke about his plans for the future.

He had brought with him five extremely interesting Kilchoman whiskies to taste: three samples and two already bottled whiskies:

  • Kilchoman New Make sample
  • Kilchoman Summer 2010 Release
  • Madeira cask sample (7 months old)
  • Pre-release sample: Bourbon Cask Matured, 100% Islay
  • German Tasting Tour Release – Oloroso Sherry

The New Make caused quite a stir with its fruitiness; the 100 % Islay pre-release sample was the favourite among most participants. With the sample, just over seven months old, from one of the few Madeira casks that Kilchoman had filled as an experiment in February 2010, he showcased a completely different side to Kilchoman whisky, beyond bourbon and sherry cask maturation.

For the Tasting Tour, Alba Import had commissioned the bottling of an exclusive Kilchoman single cask – a 1st-fill Oloroso sherry butt aged just under four years. This was only the second Kilchoman single cask release for Germany.

In addition, Alba Import had also brought along the Kilchoman Bramble liqueur.

A truly outstanding series of events! We hope there will be more in the coming years!
