2nd Kilchoman Live Tasting in 2021 announced

Kilchoman today announced the second online tasting of 2021 with George and James Wills for 8 April from 7pm Islay time.

As with the 1st online tasting of the year, the tasting pack includes the two Core Range whiskies Machir Bay and Sanaig and two pre-release samples of 2021, this time the PX Matured release and a Ruby Port Quarter Cask Finish Single Cask.

Here are the whiskies in detail:

  • Machir Bay – 46.0%. THE standard whisky from Kilchoman. A vatting of 3-5 year old Bourbon barrels (approx. 90%) and some Oloroso Sherry casks (approx. 10%).
  • Sanaig – 46.0%. The second General Release from Kilchoman is also a vatting of bourbon and sherry casks, but unlike the Machir Bay, it has a much higher proportion of sherry casks, which gives the whisky a completely different character. Here, about 70% Oloroso sherry casks are used, plus predominantly the smaller sherry hogsheads, in which the whisky matures much more quickly.
  • PX Sherry Matured – 47.3%. As the second limited edition of 2021 (after Loch Gorm, which traditionally kicks off the Kilchoman year and was tasted in the last online tasting), Kilchoman will launch a Pedro Ximénez sherry release.
Casks that previously contained the extremely sweet PX sherry are mostly used for finishing, as full maturation risks dominating the whisky character after a relatively short period of storage. Kilchoman has not only released countless PX-finish single cask bottlings in recent years, but last year also some PX single cask full maturations, which proved that with careful cask selection and relatively early bottling, a successful synthesis of the Kilchoman distillery character and the sweet PX tones is possible.
With the announced PX Sherry Matured Edition, Kilchoman is now releasing a major PX release for the first time. It is a vatting of 33 casks, nine of them PX full maturations and 24 finished in PX casks for between 12 and 18 months.
  • Ruby Port Quarter Cask Finish 2491/2012 – 55.1%. Finishings in small Ruby Port Quarter Casks were one of the novelties of the 2nd half of 2020, and here is another of those casks to taste now. The whisky has been matured in a fresh bourbon barrel for nearly 8 years before being finished in a Ruby Port Quarter Cask for one year.

The tasting packs can again be purchased for £16.66 + tax and shipping on the Kilchoman homepage.
