Loch Gorm 2024 released

The Kilchoman distillery today announced the release of this year’s Loch Gorm. Named after the famous loch near the distillery, the bottling is known to be matured exclusively in Oloroso sherry casks and is traditionally the first limited Kilchoman release of the year.

For the 2024 edition, Kilchoman founder Anthony Wills and production director Robin Bignal selected 23 Oloroso sherry butts from 2014 (17 First-fill and 6 Re-fill casks). As always with Kilchoman, the 500 litre sherry butts come from Bodega José y Miguel Martín and were filled with spirit with a phenol content of 50 ppm.

The annual Loch Gorm editions are known to differ slightly from year to year in the composition of the casks used. With two exceptions in the early days of the series, when hogsheads were also used, they are always Oloroso sherry butts, but of different ages and different numbers of first fill and refill casks.

According to Anthony Wills and Robin Bignal, their aim in compiling the casks is to create a whisky that has a recognisable Kilchoman character despite the strong sherry tones. For this year’s release, they selected predominantly 1st fill casks, the age of 9 years is slightly higher than last year, when 22 butts from the years 2013-2015 were used.

“Loch Gorm has often been our most sought after limited edition and I don’t see that changing in 2024. Distilled in 2014, these sherry butts have given this year’s release an abundance of rich spices and toffee notes. A great example of peat and sherry working in harmony together.”  Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder.
