The French Kilchoman importer and whisky shop La Maison du Whisky (LMDW) released two exclusive Kilchoman single cask bottlings in September 2016 on the occasion of its 60th anniversary. Cask No. 531/2011, filled on 1.9.2011 and No. 754/2011, filled on 1.12.2011 were two Caroni Rum Cask Finishes. These were not only the world’s first Kilchoman rum cask finishes, but also the first time that the slightly lighter peated 100% Islay whisky made from the farm’s own barley could be tasted from a cask type other than bourbon or sherry.

However, the information on the bottling date on the bottles and the maturation time on the back label of the cartons are obviously incorrect. On the back label text, which is identical for both bottles, a maturation of more than five years in a fresh bourbon barrel and a finishing period of six months in a Caroni rum cask is stated. Apart from the fact that cask no. 754 is three months younger than cask 531/2011, it can obviously only be a bourbon barrel maturation of over four years followed by a six-month Caroni finish.

The bottling date of 5.9.2016 on the two bottle labels contradicts the bottling line date stamp on the bottles: 05/08/16. In retrospect, it is not possible to determine whether this was a typing error on the bottle label or an adjustment error of the date stamp by the bottling line operator. If the latter is the correct date, however, the bottling of cask 531/2011 would not be five but only four years old…
