Kilchoman United Kingdom Exclusive STR / New French Oak Single Cask 238/2018

Exclusively for the British market, the sixth and, for the time being, penultimate bottling of Anthony Wills’ experimental finishings in New Oak Casks is now available. We have reported on this regularly, not least because we released one of the rare casks at the end of last year as a Kilchomania release.

The whisky was first matured for more than five years in a fresh STR cask (shaved, toasted & re-charred ex-red wine cask) and then finished for two years (!) in a new European oak cask.

After another bottling, which is scheduled to be released in the USA at the end of the year, the remaining New Oak Casks have now been re-racked, i.e. transferred to neutral casks, due to the oak character becoming too strong. But here too, Anthony Wills has surprised us again by transferring the casks not to refill bourbon barrels but to ‘fairly neutral’ port wine casks. In a few years’ time, we may be able to taste these casks.

We will soon be publishing a comparison tasting of four different bottlings of these extremely spicy Kilchoman whiskies.
